APRIL 9th, 1940 - SWEDEN BOWS TO NAZI 'ULTIMATUM'

HITLER ORDERS SWEDEN TO BE "STRICTLY NEUTRAL'

It was announced by the Stockholm radio last night that Germany had presented Sweden with a Note demanding that she maintain strict neutrality. The Swedish Government it is reported, replied reserving all rights to do what she thinks necessary in her own defense, but promising neutrality.

The Swedish Parliament met in secret session last night following a visit to the Foreign Minister by the German Minister to Stockholm.

King at Cabinet Meeting 

King Gustav attended a meeting of the Swedish Cabinet following the invasion of Denmark and Norway. Swedes are withdrawing savings from banks, and many businesses are at a standstill. All shipping has been stopped.

The Swedish spokesman in London stated last night "We have no direct news from Sweden, as usual. The 9 p.m. broadcast was cancelled."

The major commanding the 150 Danish troops who crossed into Sweden yesterday declared that the company hoped to join the Swedish army.
